FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What exactly is peer support?
Peer support is one Black woman standing beside another, helping her advocate for her care, her safety, and her right to be treated with respect. I am not a doctor or medical professional. I’m the founder of Brown Girl Self-Care as well as the host of the BGSC podcast, which centers the humanity and healing of Black women. This is not about giving medical advice. It’s about creating a space where you feel seen, supported, and not alone in the moments that matter.
2. Is this the same as hiring a doula or a patient advocate?
Nope. Doulas are trained professionals for birth and postpartum. Medical advocates often have legal or clinical training. Harmed to Held is about emotional support, practical prep, and having someone who gets it. Not someone here to speak for you.
3. Can you come with me to my appointment?
Yes, virtually. You can book Zoom support for your appointment and I’ll be there in real time. My camera can be off or on, depending on what feels most supportive to you.
4. Will you talk to my doctor for me?
No. I’m here to empower you to use your voice, not to replace it. But I can help you write questions, rehearse what you want to say, and debrief afterward.
5. What kind of appointments is this for?
Any kind where you feel anxious, overlooked, or want support. That might be a check-up, OB/GYN visit, follow-up after a scare, or something more serious. If it matters to you, it matters here.
6. Do I need to prepare anything before our call?
Just complete the mini intake form when you book your session. That gives me a sense of what kind of support you’re looking for. Beyond that, you don’t need to do anything extra.
7. Is this only for medical appointments?
Primarily, yes. That’s where so much harm and neglect happens. But if you're navigating
something else in healthcare, like insurance battles, test results, or even grief after mistreatment, reach out.
8. How much does this cost?
This is a low-cost, pay-what-you-can service. No gatekeeping. No shame. You choose the amount when you book. Period.
9. Is this confidential?
Yes. Nothing you share leaves the session. Your safety, privacy, and autonomy are fully respected.
10. What if I’m nervous to reach out?
Sis, that’s okay. You’ve likely had to carry too much alone for too long. You don’t have to perform, explain, or be “strong” here. You are the reason that this space exists.
