Soon You'll Be Able To Dial 9-8-8 If Experiencing A Mental Health Crisis

If you've ever been in the midst of a mental/emotional health crisis and needed to speak to a trained professional, chances are you had to google the number to reach National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255).  When you are distraught and need help, finding a number is the last thing you want to worry about.

The FCC recognizes this and has proposed a solution that may save lives.  Recently a report was sent to Congress with the recommendation of moving from the ten digit number (1-800-273-8255) to simply dialing 9-8-8 to reach a skilled crisis worker.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention suicide is the tenth leading cause of death here in the U.S. resulting in the loss of over 47,000 lives in 2017.  Women (and girls) are twice as likely to report considering attempting suicide and though black women may not be high on the list (in regards to ethnicity) we are still highly at risk for emotional/mental health concerns due to stress, anxiety, medical issues, poverty and "superwoman" syndrome (to name a few).

Note - National Suicide Prevention week this year is Sun, Sep 8, 2019 – Sat, Sep 14, 2019

Thank you for prioritizing yourself,
